Proyecto CHAC celebrates students' achievements Proyecto CHAC celebrates students' achievements (May 19, 2000)

By Jose Antonio Vargas

Nearing the end of its five-year grant from the Center for Substance Abuse Prevention in June, Proyecto CHAC celebrated the achievements of its students at its annual report to the community on May 11.

Members and friends of Proyecto CHAC, which serves Latino students and parents at Graham Middle School, celebrated with food, music, and artwork at the Mountain View Community Center in Rengstorff Park as community members, parents, and students offered informative, positive reports about the organization's accomplishments this year.

In his opening remarks Rev. David Mann, executive director of the Peninsula Interfaith Action, called for adding programs like CHAC to all schools in Mountain View, especially Castro School and Mountain View High School. He also congratulated the students for their academic development and the parents for their support and good work.

Following Mann, CHAC director Lorena Sanchez Castaneda spoke about the benefits of having the program at Graham.

"Because of CHAC, students feel more welcomed at their school," Sanchez Castaneda explained. "They feel that they're a part of it. They participate in more school activities, are more positive about their culture, and are happy to get help in their language."

Graham students Yesenia Lopez and Rosa Isela Armora, together with parent Cristina Castillo, talked about the benefits of having CHAC at their school. Mountain View High School student Hector Gomez, guided by coordinator Carlos Rodriguez, discussed OLLIN, the continuation of the CHAC program in the high school level.

Said computer instructor Donna Taylor, one of the three Graham teachers who attended the event, "Proyecto CHAC is a wonderful program. It's a program that gives a lot of support to the Latino students and their families. They do a lot for the teachers, too. They help bring the families in during parent-teacher meetings and help build communication between the two."
