School board president Farmer retires

Colleagues on the Mountain View-Los Altos High School District board honored board president Kim Farmer and wished her well this week on her retirement from the board after a four-year term.
Farmer and her husband, Jeff, who helped found the Old Mountain View Neighborhood Association, plan a move to Napa Valley in the spring, where they will put down new roots in St. Helena. Kim Farmer lived in that small community when she was a child.
Leaving her board post, Farmer said she plans "to stay involved for another few months before moving." She has a special interest in seeing the Mountain View-Whisman elementary district merger succeed. "I'll be keeping my ear to the ground on this -- I want to see it work."
Looking back on her board term, Farmer says she is most proud of "having hired a wonderful superintendent, Rich Fischer." She is also pleased that "relations within the district among staff, students and everyone are in a good place."
She thinks the district can take pride in its move to open honors classes to all students at Mountain View High -- "the district is in a position to take off and make great strides in closing the achievement gap."
"The board has been very supportive of the district. It's a good board and district," Farmer says.
The Farmers, who have lived in Mountain View for over 20 years, have two adult daughters. "We have strong ties here, but we love the beauty of Napa Valley," she said.
