Activists tour Moffett wetlands
(July 13, 2001) By Kris Resellmo
Concerned residents and environmental groups participated in a walking tour of the Moffett wetlands July 10.
The tour was led by Lenny Siegel, Mountain View resident and director of the Center for Public Environmental Oversight. Siegel is an expert on military base realignment.
About 20 people attended the informal tour, among those representatives from the Silicon Valley Toxics Coalition, the League of Woman Voters, Citizen's Committee to Expand the Refuge, ACTERRA, and Alliance for a New Moffett Field.
Siegel discussed some of the core issues of the restoration. Special attention was given to the storm water retention pond which may or may not be excavated. The pond is the largest area slated for environmental cleanup. Siegel and environmental groups called for the Navy to consider cleanup options that would allow eventual tidal restoration.
City councilwoman Sally Lieber will bring a resolution supporting the restoration efforts of environmental groups to the council in a few weeks.
