Play opens at Los Altos

The Broken Box Theatre Group of Los Altos High School opens "The Visit" by Friedrich Duerenmatt on Feb. 5 through Feb. 7 at 7 p.m. and on Feb. 8 at 2 p.m. Performances will be held at the school's Eagle Theater at 201 Almond Ave. Tickets are $8-$10.

MVLA Students of the Month

Mountain View-Los Altos Union High School District last week released the names of its students of the month for September through December 2003.

* September 2003: Sheila Mistry, Mountain View high School and Laura Godden , Los Altos High School.

* October 2003: Andrew Beckman, Alta Vista High School; Shannon Coxson, Moffett High School; and Luisa Zapata, Mountain View High School

* November 2003: None.

* December 2003: Rohit Shrawagi, Los Altos High School and Patrick Shih, Mountain View High School.

High school board supports Measures J, B

The Mountain View-Los Altos high school threw their support behind Measure J -- Mountain View-Whisman School District's $1.6 million parcel tax that would go toward maintaining school services and programs -- and Measure B, Santa Clara County Libraries' $5.3 million parcel tax targeted toward maintaining hours, books and services at libraries around the county.

The high school board last week also declared February Silicon Valley Reads Month for the district. Trustees ask that students, parents, teachers, staff and community members read the 2004 Silicon Valley Reads book "Fahrenheit 451" by Ray Bradbury.

Writing contest

Insight College Prep Centers, along with Books Inc., will host a creative writing contest, "Musings of the Mind' Eye," for high school students living in several cities including Mountain View. The theme is "vision" and submissions will be accepted beginning Feb. 16. Entries must be e-mailed or postmarked by April 16.

Entries must be no longer than 1,500 words, double-spaced, typed and accompanied by an application, which can be printed out online at www.insightcollege.com or picked up at the information desk at Books Inc. on Castro Street or at the Stanford Shopping Mall.

Teens should turn in two copies each with a cover page stating the title of the story, word count and grade level. The author's name should only be on the application form since the story judging is anonymous. For more information on the contest, e-mail Stephanie Chiang at stephanie@insightcollege.com.

Castro School hosts dual immersion speaker

Kathryn Lindholm-Leary, a professor of child and adolescent development at San Jose State University who has written extensively on two-way immersion education, will speak at Castro School at 505 Escuela Ave. on Feb. 23, starting at 6:30 p.m.

The event is free and open to the public.

Parents interested in enrolling their kindergarten student in Castro's Spanish-English dual immersion program may attend information night on Feb. 23. The session starts at 6:30 p.m.

Gay film festival

The Gay-Straight Alliance at Los Altos High School will host a gay film festival Feb. 28 from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. The festival is open to the public and will take place on the Los Altos High School campus, which is located at 20l Almond Avenue.

The suggested donation is $5 per movie and $15 for an all-day pass to five movies. The money will go toward educating the public on gay youth issues.
