St. Francis takes tournament title

With the championship of the Brother Wally Ryan Tournament secured, the St. Francis baseball team improved its record to 7-0 on the season. Pitcher Daniel Descalso also improved to 3-0 after a 13-5 win over Bellarmine in the tournament's championship game.

Descalso was strong both on the mound and behind the plate. Giving up only three runs in six innings, Descalso remained a force in the Lancers' strong offensive push. He had three hits in the final game, including the teams' only triple and brought in two runs.

Third basemen Jared Lansford also contributed to St. Francis' victory, hitting a home run and three RBIs.

Bellarmine's five errors in the first inning, which St. Francis converted into three runs, led to its only loss of the season.

Earlier in the tournament, Descalso and company played strong in their semifinal match against Menlo-Atherton and won 5-1. After four innings of being shut out by Menlo-Atherton, St. Francis attacked with four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Descalso brought in two runs, and outfielder Matt Long hit the team's only double. Pitcher Rex Petrill took the win and improved to 3-0.

St. Francis' next home game is on Mar. 19 against St. Ignatius at 3:30 p.m. The next time the Lancers face Bellarmine is on May 4 at home.


Spartans stay on top

Mountain View's baseball team improved to 3-0 on the season with a 9-2 win over Monta Vista on March 11. Pitcher Eric Davis picked up his second win on the season, and Joe Tepe showed his offensive strength with a double and three RBIs.

The Spartans combined for 12 hits in the game, including six runs in the bottom of the fourth inning.

The next Mountain View home game will be on Mar. 18 against Santa Clara at 3:30 p.m.


Los Altos opens strong

The Los Altos baseball team picked up its first division win after destroying Milpitas with a final score of 14-5 last week. Most of the offense came from Donnie Ecker who hit a grand slam and Adam Wilson, who had four hits including two doubles. Pitcher Troy Haury picked up his first win.

The Eagles then lost a close 6-5 game against Fremont on March 12. Fremont rallied back in the final inning, scoring two runs to take the victory. The loss moves the Los Altos division record to 1-1.

The next Los Altos home game will be against Los Gatos on Mar. 26 at 3:30 p.m.


Hoo leads St. Francis

The St. Francis softball team improved to 4-1 on the season and pitcher Mollie Hoo picked up her fourth win after the Lancers won in extra innings against Archbishop Mitty on March 11.

One run in the bottom of the tenth inning was all that the Lancers needed to walk away with the victory.

The Lancers defeated Los Altos 1-0 March 8, with the only run scored in the top of the first inning.

Hoo also performed impressively against Sacred Heart Cathedral on March 9. Not only did she pick up her third win of the season, but she also brought in four RBIs off three hits.

St. Francis' only loss went to Carlmont in a 4-2 game on March 10.
