Voices Around Town
(March 19, 2004) Does America need tougher decency laws?
Asked in downtown Mountain View. Photos and interviews by Dan Stapleton.
"Definitely. A lot of that (indecent) stuff is available to children, and one of the reasons we have cable is so that different things are available to adults that children can't get their hands on."
Christina Harper, Mountain View
"No. Americans, grow up. I think you can turn the television off when you don't want to watch and turn it on when you do."
Todd Anhalt, Los Altos
"I think they're overreacting, to be honest. I think if they hadn't made such a big deal out of [the Super Bowl halftime show], no one would have even noticed."
Joy Hewett, Mountain View
"Of course not. I'm not in favor of censorship. It's a lot of rhetoric to keep people's minds off of what's really important."
Mike Gardener, San Jose
"I think they should be stricter about enforcing the standards, otherwise the standards are meaningless. But I don't think the standards themselves should be made stricter."
Janice Soderberg, Mountain View
