Day of the Teacher

School districts across California celebrated the Day of the Teacher on May 12.

The California Teachers Association and the Association of Mexican American Educators sponsored the bill first proclaiming Day of the Teacher. It was signed into law in 1982. The Day of the Teacher is pattered after "El Dia del Mastro" (Spanish for "Day of the Teacher"), which is celebrated in Mexico and other Latin American countries.

MVHS spring concert

The Mountain View High School Music Department will present its spring instrumental concert on May 26 at 7 p.m. Tickets are $5 to $7. Performances will be by the symphonic band, wind ensemble, string orchestra and symphony orchestra The event will take place at the campus' Spartan Theater, located at 3535 Truman Ave. For more information call 940-4647.

Grove Foundation scholarship winners

Twenty-three seniors at Mountain View High School won Grove Foundation School-to-Career Scholarships. These $2,000-a year for up to two year scholarships are award to students who have a focused career goal that can be achieved in a community college or training institute setting. The scholarship is designed to honor and reward students who wish to go to college for a specific, applied career goal but who may not be able to afford it on their own.

This year's Mountain View High recipients are: Cynthia Resendiz, Jennifer Hemenez, Vanessa Acosta, Ireena Salvatera, Samantha Wemmer, Veronica Gonzalez, Dina Barrios, Guadalupe Villalobos, Dan Neumeister, Randell Dela Cruz, Daniel Redmayne, Daniel Fischer, Adrian Orozco, Steve Cervantes, Mark Walch, Nick Michaelian, Nick Clay, Mike Pinette, Cody Garcia, Maria Roxana Landaverde, Mario Leos, Max Davidson and Josue Tejada.

CSMA scholarship winners

The Mountain View-Whisman school board last week recognized students who received scholarships from the Community School of Music and Art (CSMA).

The following students received awards: Daniel Limpiado from Landels received the Ann Lewis Scholarship; Malik Letatau from Bubb received the David O. Scholarship; Yanoli Lugo from Theuerkauf received the Al Tisch Scholarship; and Odalys Vallejo from Slater, Rashmeen Kaur from Castro, Francisco Carrillo-Ortega from Monta Loma and Jean Ching from Huff all received CSMA Visual Arts Scholarships.

Mountain View college student honored

Regan Fuller of Mountain View was recently inducted into Virginia Tech University's chapter of the National Residence Hall Honorary. Fuller is a history major.

The National Residence Hall Honorary was established in 1964 to give recognition to outstanding student leaders who work and live in campus residence halls.

The Virginia Tech chapter represents the top 1 percent of student leaders in campus residence halls. Members are inducted each spring semester and must have a grade point average of at least 2.5 and demonstrate strong leadership in their residence halls.

International Festival

The St. Joseph Parish International Festival will be held from May 21 to May 23. The event will be held on the church's school grounds, located at 1120 Miramonte Ave. There will be carnival rides, game booths, a raffle as well as an international blend of food and entertainment. This year's entertainment includes the band, the Cool Jerks. Proceeds benefit the church and school. Free admission and parking.

The festival will run May 21 from 5 p.m. until 10 p.m., May 22 from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. and May 23 from noon until 7 p.m. For more information, call 691-1531.

School board candidate workshop

The Santa Clara County School Boards Association will host a candidates' workshop for prospective school board members May 22. The workshop will be held from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the Office of the United Way, 1922 The Alameda in San Jose.

The event is free and open to all prospective candidates or those who may have an interest in board service. For more information call (408) 453-6515.
