New playgrounds open
Two local parks finally unveiled new and improved playgrounds. The city spent $236,000 to bring San Veron and Rex-Manor parks in compliance with safety and accessibility guidelines, according to assistant community services director Paula Bettencourt.
The state's Integrated Waste Management Board provided a $25,000 grant to help resurface the play areas with rubber from recycled tires. The surfaces used more than 10,600 pounds of recycled rubber, the equivalent of 883 tires that would have wound up as waste.
