(October 15, 2004) Eagles split
The Los Altos girls volleyball team defeated Milpitas on Oct. 4 only to lose to Los Gatos two days later.
The Eagles took Milpitas 25-18, 25-14, 25-22. Lauren Schaefer led with eight kills followed by Michelle Nelson with six.
Los Gatos beat the Eagles 25-14, 25-14, 25-18 to remain undefeated in league play with a 3-0 record.
Los Altos' record is now 24-3 overall and 4-1 in league. The Eagles will face Saratoga on Oct. 19 at Saratoga.
Spartans, Lancers tackle Crystal Springs course
Earlier this month, Mountain View and St. Francis cross-country runners took on the Crystal Springs course in Belmont for the first time this season. Mountain View hosted the SCVAL Invitational on Oct. 5 and St. Francis raced in the Serra Invitational there on Oct. 9.
The Crystal Springs course is 2.95 miles and will be the site of the WCAL, DAL and SCVAL finals.
At the SCVAL meet, the Spartan boys were led by sophomore Roger Huang, who earned the second fastest time on the course in Mountain View history in 17:08. Robbie Reid followed close behind in 17:24, recording the third fastest time for Mountain View.
The Mountain View boys placed sixth overall as did the girls.
On Oct. 9, St. Francis' Ben Sitler finished first for the boys with a time of 15:27 minutes, at a pace of 5:14 per mile.
Earlier this season, Sitler set course records against Gunn and at the Chieftan Classic.
St. Francis and Mountain View will race at the Monterey Bay Invitational at Toro Park in Salinas on Oct. 16.
Eagle field hockey falls short
The Los Altos girls field hockey team played a strong game against Live Oak on Oct. 6 but came up one goal short, losing 2-1. The lone Eagle goal was scored by Fariba Dorosti, with an assist from Liz Sakach.
The Eagles dominated against Westmont on Oct. 8 but only managed a 1-1 tie following one period of overtime.
Melanie Marquer scored with an assist from Shri Vyas.
The Eagles will face Monta Vista at home on Oct. 20.
Marathoner defends title
Mountain View resident and Kenya native John Weru, 25, defended his title at the Lake Tahoe Marathon on Saturda, winning the South Lake Tahoe event in 2:37:26.
Weru won the event last year in 2:35:05.
