Touch-screen voting validated
(December 03, 2004) Secretary of State Kevin Shelley released preliminary results last week of the parallel monitoring program, which indicated that California touch-screen voting systems recorded votes accurately.
The program tested the accuracy of touch-screen voting in the 10 California counties that used the system during the Nov. 2 General Election.
According to the secretary of state's office, teams of testers lodged predetermined votes while simulating actual election conditions.
All test voting was videotaped with a time and date stamp to provide a method of determining tester or equipment error.
The program was one of approximately two-dozen security measures imposed by Shelley as conditions for use of the touch-screen systems.
Alameda, Napa and Santa Clara counties used the new system.
