Community forum for supe search

Residents are invited to a series of special community forums to provide input in the Mountain View-Whisman School District's superintendent search. The forums will be held March 25 from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m., 2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. and 5 p.m. to 6 p.m.

A couple of open forums for parents will be held the same day from 11 a.m. to noon, 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. Community forums will also be held March 28 from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. and 7 p.m. to 8 p.m.

All the forums will be held at the school district offices at 750-A San Pierre Way. The public can send written comments to the district's search firm, The Cosca Group, at 640 California St., El Segundo, CA 90245, or e-mail comments to Steve Goldstone at gostevego@earthlink.net.

Bubb science night

Bubb Elementary School will be hosting a family science night on March 31 from 6:30 p.m. to 7:45 p.m. in the school's multipurpose room. Activities at the event will be based on the student's curriculum. Every family will have a chance to work with worms, rocks, fossils, magnets, bleach, static electricity and microscopes.

Community book discussion

A community discussion of "The Kite Runner" by Khaled Hosseini will be held as part of the 20th annual Writers Week at Los Altos High School on March 31, starting at 7:30 p.m. The public is invited to read the book ahead of time and then join in discussion groups held at the high school and led by the English department faculty.

Hosseini will speak about his work at the high school's theater on April 5 at 7:30 p.m. Following his appearance, there will be a book signing with copies of "The Kite Runner" available for sale.

Los Altos High School is located at 201 Almond Ave. in Los Altos. Both events are free and open to the public.

LAHS announces National Merit Finalists

Los Altos High School announced that 12 members of the Class of 2005 have achieved National Merit Finalist status. These students are: Eleanor Birrell, Stephanie Fan, Morgan Freret, Bryce Hoffman, Jennifer Hsiaw, Kenneth Lee, Wei Wei Liu, Peter Moore, Alan Richardson, Scott Seyfarth, Amy Tong and Sandra Voss.

The National Merit Finalists will be recognized for this achievement at the Annual Senior Awards Night in May. All are eligible for the National Merit Scholarships, which will be awarded in the spring.

De Anza's speech department honored

De Anza College's Speech Communication Department was presented with the Model Teaching Program Award at the Western States Communication Association's annual conference, held Feb. 21 in San Francisco.

The department met the following criteria for the award: Reflects the breadth and depth of the communication discipline; demonstrates that teaching personnel have specialized training in communication; integrates curricular and co-curricular activities; has strong administrative support; and relates to the mission of its institution.
