Lancer fires no-hitter at Sacred Heart girls

It was one of those games in which everything fell perfectly into place for the St. Francis softball team. Well, nearly perfectly.

Save for one measly walk in the fifth inning, St. Francis sophomore Lindsay O'Hearn would have thrown a perfect game against Sacred Heart Prep on Apr. 9. As it stands, O'Hearn's no-hitter powered the Lancers to their first West Catholic Athletic League win, a 14-0 rout over the visiting Gators.

"I think this girl is going to be a star," said St. Francis assistant coach Tim Fullerton of O'Hearn. "Get used to seeing her name."

Following a 1-0 loss to Presentation on Apr. 5 in which St. Francis managed only three hits, the Lancers made sure to get their offense started early against Sacred Heart Prep. St. Francis exploded for 12 runs in the first inning, punishing the winless Gators.

Senior Easton Henrikson led the Lancers offense, clubbing a home run and a double, and driving in three runs, all in the first inning.

In addition to striking out eight Gators in the abbreviated five-inning game, O'Hearn proved adept at the plate. The sophomore recorded a double and 2 RBIs in addition to scoring two runs.

St. Francis (8-5, 1-2 league) emptied its bench after the second inning, giving its reserves some valuable playing time in league action.

The Lancers host St. Ignatius at Foothill College on Apr. 15 and hope to avenge their first WCAL loss in a visit to Valley Christian on Apr. 19.

Spartan girls win at track and field as boys falter

The Mountain View girls track and field team dominated Santa Clara in an El Camino Division meet on Apr. 7. With first-place finishes in 12 of 15 events, the visiting Spartans won 82-44.

Three Mountain View athletes each won two separate events. Sophomore Kate Kornegay took the 100-meter hurdles in an impressive 13.1 and conquered the 300-meter hurdles in 51.3. Roni Amsden leaped 15'7" to win the long jump and also took the 200-meter run in 27.6. Freshman Tania Morimoto won both long-distance events, finishing the 1600-meter in 5:37.8 and the 3200-meter in 12:14.8.

The Mountain View boys found the going a bit tougher, falling 65-62 to Santa Clara. Justin Bull led the Spartans, winning the triple and the high jump.

Mountain View competes in the Hampton-Phillips Invitational at San Jose City College on Apr. 16 and finishes its El Camino Division regular season at Homestead on Apr. 28.

Los Altos boys cruising to track title

The Los Altos boys track and field team continued its undefeated season with a 73-48 win over visiting Los Gatos on Apr. 6. The key to the Eagles' success remains the combination of individual stars that routinely win their events and a supporting cast that fills up the scoreboard each meet.

Senior Jeff Clark (long jump and triple jump) and sophomore Eric Hersey (110-meter hurdles and 200-meter) continued their outstanding seasons by again winning multiple events. Junior Dana McDaniel followed their lead by topping the field in both the 300-meter hurdles and 100-meter dash.

But seniors Evan Nottage, James Nicholson and David Barth showed the depth of the Los Altos squad (4-0 league) by each notching a pair of second-place finishes, while junior Kris Jen placed third in the long jump and triple jump.

The Los Altos girls, while continuing to receive top-notch performances from its sprinters, failed to get their elusive first win in falling to Los Gatos 68-59.

Sophomore Bria Nelson (200-meter and 400-meter) and senior Daphne Owen (800-meter) maintained their winning ways to lead the Eagles. Junior Alicia Yanez won the 100-meter dash and was runner-up to Nelson in the 200-meter race.
