Group aims to save Hangar One
(August 12, 2005) Feinstein, Boxer will be asked to pressure Navy
By Jon Wiener
A growing resistance dedicated to keeping Hangar One standing is gaining momentum on the heels of a Navy announcement that it would consider a dozen options for the cleanup of the structure.
The Save Hangar One Committee -- a group of military buffs, aviators and environmentalists -- will hold its third meeting this week to discuss ways to increase community pressure on the Navy and enlist politicians in its cause. The group is meeting Thursday at 7 p.m. in City Hall.
The group is sending letters to U.S. Rep. Anna Eshoo and Senators Dianne Feinstein and Barbara Boxer, asking them to help pressure the Navy into conducting a full study and evaluation of the available clean-up options. Past campaigns have convinced the Navy to reverse its position on a wetlands being polluted by runoff from Hangar One and to take responsibility for the interior of the landmark building.
The Navy is holding an open house Aug. 18 at 5 p.m. outside the Moffett main gate, where it will discuss in detail the options it has been looking at. A more formal "alternatives workshop" will follow. A final decision is due Sept. 2, with work set to begin in January.
