Concert to help fight domestic violence
Atherton Vice Mayor Charles Marsala will host a special benefit concert this Saturday to raise money for Mountain View's Support Network for Battered Women.
The concert, "Hope on Fire," will feature performances by singer-songwriter Deborah Levoy and by Vienna Teng, a local musician who has performed on the Late Show with David Letterman. In addition to the concert, this outdoor garden event will include a reception and silent auction, with proceeds benefiting the Support Network.
The event runs from 5 to 8:30 p.m. and will be held at Marsala's home at 33 Emilie Ave. Tickets are $35 to $65 and can be purchased at the door or at www.hosv.org.

Peninsula Rose Society turns 50
For long-lived fidelity and devotion, few flowers can match the rose -- as shown by the celebration this month of the 50th anniversary of the Peninsula Rose Society.
That's 50 years of monthly meetings, annual shows, countless lectures and annual picnics devoted to a single flower. The society currently has 104 members representing an area from San Jose to San Francisco.
The anniversary celebration will take place at the society's regular monthly meeting, 7:30-9:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 10, at the Veterans Memorial Building, 1455 Madison, Redwood City. A special slide show on the history of the organization -- including a tribute to society founders, the late Clay and Lucia Morgan -- will be featured along with an anniversary cake and ice cream. The public is invited to attend.
