Thirteen car burglaries in same neighborhood

Mountain View police are looking for three or more men who apparently broke into 13 different cars in the same neighborhood Wednesday.

Police say the thieves went up and down La Salle and Preston drives south of El Camino, either breaking into cars or entering cars that were unlocked and stole small items. They took stereo equipment and sunglasses, and spokesperson Liz Wylie said police were still talking to victims to see what else was missing.

In some cases, Wylie said, "The cars were just ransacked, but nothing was taken. It's just hard to know." Police believe the burglaries are all related since "they were all in the same area," she said.

One area resident said she saw three Hispanic men trying to enter a car. They left in a white boxy van, possibly a Dodge, Wylie said. The witness described the suspects as being in their 20s or 30s and all wearing dark clothes.

Uh-oh. I hope readers will remember the "innocent until proven guilty" thing in regard to the claim about "three Hispanic men."

We've had several cycles of car break-in's on Martens and Carmelita....numerous cars broken into on the same night, sometimes valuables stolen from cars, and a few cars have been stolen (and thankfully recovered) over the years.

Guess who was picked up by the MV police and found guilty in court, for one recent string of car break-in's?

An 17-year-old white male, resident of Los Altos, high school drop-out, who was having some fun at 4am on his way home from a night out with friends.

yes, let's not describe the possible suspects just in case we are wrong. Better they get away then risk a PC episode.

Grrrrrrrrr.

gee, let's see...
I guess you could check with the police to find out the percentage
of ethnic groups causing the most mischief. For your own AWARENESS.

I don't care if they were Cockapoo's, They are what they are. Car thieves in the night. I am wondering why the witness didn't call the Police right then and there. Why did they wait till after the fact? In my neighborhood, we all know if someone is up to no good and we call the police immediately. Thats the only way these people who ever they are will be caught. Also its a good thing nobody had to use their car when they were being robbed, because they might have gotten hurt by these morons.

Two cars we're hit at Gunn HS a few weeks back. In these times, good to keep your possessions with you (computer, purse, etc...) rather than invite a broken window.

Being one of the victims and having talked with the woman - another victim - who reported the physical description of the perpetrators, she made no attempt to stereotype or offer racially-motivated characterizations. What is she supposed to tell the police ... that she observed three sentient beings breaking into her auto ... in the hope of not causing offense??

I agree with Bob .... Grrrrr.

We had several break-ins near Moffett and Middlefield between 6/23 and 6/27. Not sure exact date as I didn't check my car but they stole similar items reported in the article. It doesn't sound like the police are doing much (case number for insurance claim...), therefore there is little preventing this from happening again.

Hopefully these punks get caught and charged with ALL of these burglaries.
