The northbound lane of Shoreline Boulevard, between Latham and Mercy streets, was closed for about an hour Wednesday morning, as crews worked to clear debris left after a Cobra kit car ran into a tree on the median, Mountain View police said. The driver of the car was bloodied by the wreck, but was reported to be in stable condition at a local hospital.
A passerby, Mountain View resident Mike Gowan, wrote in an e-mail that the Cobra appeared to be "pretty mangled" when he rode by on his bicycle at about 8:35 a.m.
According to police spokeswoman Liz Wylie, officers were called to the scene at 7:49 a.m. Wylie said police do not know what caused the accident but said alcohol was not a factor. The victim, a male, was driving alone in the car and no other vehicles were involved in the crash.
