Dittmer's begins remodeling new location

Dittmer Bubert, founder of the longtime Mountain View butcher shop and deli Dittmer's Gourmet Meats and Wurst-Haus, has started remodeling the building that will soon become his business' new location.

The new Dittmer's, located at 4540 El Camino Real is in Los Altos. Bubert said he has mixed feelings about moving his business out of the city where it began.

"We would have loved to stay in Mountain View," he said. But, even though he wishes he could have stayed in Mountain View -- where he has lived for more than 20 years -- he noted that the new location is "right across the street from Mountain View."

Bubert bought the business from its former owner in 1978. After a Jan. 23 fire at his former shop on San Antonio Road, the family-owned business made plans to move to a bigger location in Mountain View. When those plans fell through, Bubert decided to jump on the Los Altos location.

The new location is about twice the size of the old Dittmer's, which will be nice both for him and his employees, as well as for customers, Bubert said. For this reason, he said he is "excited" and even hopeful that he may be able to improve upon his business' service with the extra space.

Dittmer's may open as soon as April, but Bubert said it could take longer. Remodeling began Dec. 5.

When it does reopen, regular customers are likely to recognize some familiar faces. Bubert said the insurance from the fire allowed him to keep several employees on the payroll while he searched for a new location.

I am so thrilled that there is finally some progress for the Bubert "family" -- we have missed them and their wonderful meat market.

Best of luck to all the employees that couldn't stay on the payroll.

The web link doesn't work - where is the new building? Great news, though!

I'm very excited about the new location; it will be so much easier for me to go there using the bus. I used to only go to Dittmer's when I needed a specialty item, but I can see going there for all my meat if I don't have to walk an extra half mile to and from the bus stop.
