Driver arrested in fatal party van crash

The California Highway Patrol arrested the driver of a party van that was involved in a deadly crash on northbound Interstate 280 in Santa Clara County near Portola Valley on Sunday night.

Jason Quinonez, 43, was identified as the driver of a converted black Chevrolet Express 3500 traveling north on I-280 that went off the roadway and struck a tree south of Alpine Road around 10:50 p.m., CHP Officer Amelia Jack said.

The van overturned in the crash 20 feet away from the freeway, and a man who was a passenger was killed, she said.

Quinonez was found near the scene with minor injuries and it was initially not clear that he was the driver, according to the CHP. He was taken to Stanford Hospital for minor lacerations and later booked into Santa Clara County Jail on suspicion of felony hit and run, DUI and manslaughter, Jack said.

The CHP has yet to confirm the company that owns the vehicle, she said.

Traffic was blocked on northbound I-280 for hours after the accident. The roadway was completely cleared shortly after 4:30 a.m. Monday.

Sadly, this loss of life and tragic event is once again brought to you by Alcohol. Alcohol. Ask for it by name and glamorize it socially.

Wait a mo'?

How can the driver of the van, who was thrown from the van, be charged with felony HIT AND RUN? DUI and manslaughter I understand but is being thrown from the van considered H&R?
Did he lie about being the driver? or what?

He probably was trying to leave the scene.

If he was DUI, I don't care what they charge him with.
