The Earth gets an hour on Saturday
|
This Saturday from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. the city of Mountain View is participating in "Earth Hour 2009," billed as a "global climate event" that asks everyone to turn off all non-essential lighting, excluding lights required for public safety.
"To date, more than 1,858 cities, towns and municipalities in 81 countries have committed to go dark for one hour on March 28," says a press release from the city, adding that it would create a "visual symbol" for "encouraging energy conservation and climate change awareness."
The City Council passed a resolution supporting the event, which was devised by the World Wildlife Fund. It will cost the city less than $500 for staff time to turn off the lights on several city buildings.
