Fireworks show returns to Shoreline
Night of lights and music among several Peninsula events to celebrate the Fourth

All over the Peninsula, cities will be celebrating the Fourth of July with fireworks, parades and other events though the most spectacular show is probably the one in Mountain View's back yard.
Shoreline Amphitheatre is holding its 23rd annual "Fireworks Spectacular" on the night of Saturday, July 4 starting at 8 p.m. Shoreline is joining forces with the San Francisco Symphony, which will play many selections including Disney songs, music from "2001: A Space Odyssey," "The Planets" and "Star Trek." During the Star Trek retrospective, actor George Takei, a cast member of the original television series, will be guest narrator.
Many tickets to the event appear to be sold out, but as of press time a number of $30 tickets were still available on the Live Nation Web site. Parking at Shoreline costs $10. Residents can also watch the fireworks show from the Palo Alto Baylands or from Shoreline Park.
Other major Fourth of July events on the Peninsula include:
* The 28th annual Palo Alto Chili Cook-Off. Twenty teams will be competing at Mitchell Park, located at 600 E. Meadow Drive in Palo Alto, to serve the best chili on Saturday, July 4 from noon to 5 p.m. There will be live music and arts and crafts. The event is free, but to taste the chili participants pay $5 to try out five different chilies. They then vote on the best recipe, and one chef leaves the event a chili champion. * The Fourth of July Parade & Celebration in Menlo Park. The parade starts at Santa Cruz and Chestnut and runs from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. The celebration starts at noon at Burgess Park and includes games, crafts and music. There is a $6 fee for the parade and activities. (My only wish is that the surrounding businesses would let people park in their EMPTY lots. Not very patriotic or neighborly of them to make families with small children hike miles down Shoreline Blvd in the dark)

The only thing that would make the 4th even cooler would be a parade or event downtown. For a daytime activity, we often go to Redwood City on the train. We'd rather stay here.

We had lots of neighbors join us for an impromptu viewing on our street since we have an unobstructed vantage point. It was really nice; walk outside your front door when you hear the first BOOMS and walk back inside when the finale is over. Perfect for people who don't want to deal w/ crowds or have young ones who can't stay up that late.

We look forward to watching the fireworks every year. This year, we even went to the concert too, which was fantastic. When we have kids, we look forward to sharing this fun event with them.

Posted by eric, a resident of another community, on Jul 7, 2009 at 10:39 am For all of you stuck with me in ludicrous traffic to go three blocks after the (wonderful!) show, know that it will look like that every day when the city does all the development they want in Shoreline (and with not a penny for the schools as a result of the additional property tax)

in the middle of the road to see the fireworks. we seen almost 4 accidents as people 'stopped' and the cars behind them tooting their horns for them to keep moving - just amazing.
