Assemblyman Paul Fong this week celebrated the passage of a California resolution apologizing for racist acts and laws enacted against Chinese-Americans since the days of the Gold Rush.
Fong, who represents the 22nd District, which includes Mountain View, held a press conference at the Asian Americans for Community Involvement headquarters in San Jose on Monday, July 27 to celebrate the passage of this new law. The law was enacted on July 17.
This is the first official apology and recognition "of the persecution of Chinese in California," according to a press release, "due to many unjust laws and unfair labor practices. These laws, restricting Chinese-Americans, started during the Gold Rush, and the last law was appealed in 1960."
