Voters to pick three members of LASD board

On Tuesday, voters will pick which of four candidates will take three open seats on the Los Altos School District's board of trustees.
The election pits incumbent Mark Goines against challengers Tamara Logan, Douglas Smith and Rowene Hood. John Radford's name will appear on the ballot, though he has withdrawn from the race.
Goines, 56, currently serves as president of the Los Altos Education Foundation and co-chair of the Citizens Committee for Finance. His daughter is a fifth grader in the district. He holds a BA and MBA from UC Berkeley and works as an investor.
Hood, 61, is a real estate broker who volunteered with the district when her adult son was attending school in Los Altos. She has since been a community volunteer, with recent leadership involvement with the American Cancer Society's Relay For Life.
Logan, 50, serves on the Citizens Committee for Finance. In the past she has held the position of PTA Legislative Chairperson. She has an MS from Stanford and works as an engineer at Cisco.
Smith, 42, is a board member on the Los Altos Education Foundation. He has also served on the district's Curriculum Council and on the Parcel Tax Survey Committee. He has been a PTA member at his children's schools, Almond and Gardner-Bullis, and works as a software engineer.
The Los Altos School District includes most of Los Altos, half of Los Altos Hills, parts of Mountain View and Palo Alto and some unincorporated areas. The current financial crisis and ongoing litigation between the district and Bullis Charter School are among the most contentious issues facing the district board in the coming months.— Kelsey Mesher Are you receiving Express, our free daily e-mail edition? Posted by Steven, a resident of the Old Mountain View neighborhood, on Nov 3, 2009 at 10:11 pm From my understanding in talking to personal friends who are teachers in the Los Altos School district, none of the candidates are qualified to be on the school board. They are not supportive of teachers and truly do not have a good understanding on education. Rather, the present school board and candidates run it as a business. It is not a business. Los Altos schools had great test scores and teachers. In order to keep that, the Superintendent,School board and Teacher's union better get their act together otherwise, their schools will be filled with incompetent teachers because all the good ones will have left!
