Google maps ease pedestrian input

 | There are hundreds of people who travel the city every day without a car, learning first-hand where major obstacles are for pedestrians and cyclists. If you are one of those people, the city would like your input.
Now that the city is updating its General Plan, which will guide future development in Mountain View, city staffers say this is a good time to study the city's "pedestrian experience," and will be taking input for a "pedestrian master plan" until Dec. 15.
As part of that effort, the city has set up a modifiable Google Map, available at mountainview.gov/pedestrian. A handful of users have already begun dropping place markers on the map with notes about how walking paths, crosswalks, pedestrian bridges or bike lanes are needed.
Those wishing to provide input on the pedestrian plan can also e-mail Helen Kim at helen.kim@mountainview.gov, or send a letter to Helen Kim, PO Box 7540, Mountain View, CA, 94039.— Daniel DeBolt Are you receiving Express, our free daily e-mail edition? See a sample and sign-up for Express.

About eight months ago, I started walking and riding my bicycle instead of driving as often as possible to do local errands, reduce my carbon footprint and improve my fitness level.

Posted by Jes' Sayin', a resident of the North Whisman neighborhood, on Nov 9, 2009 at 3:16 pm It would be easier walking if the bicycles weren't running me down on the sidewalks all the time. I believe the Castro St. sidewalks are supposed to be bicycle-free, at least per a sign I saw there, but I've never seen it enforced and bikes are going along there all the time. It gets especially tricky when someone is walking a dog.

I think enforcement may be inconsistent. But there have been times when I've been riding down Castro, on the street like you're supposed to, past cyclists who were pulled over for riding on the sidewalk...

To track our schedule, go to Web Link. Note that we are also involved with the development of the Pedestrian Master Plan.
