LAHS student club kicks off human rights week
|
The Los Altos High School Amnesty International club is presenting a special speaker event Monday evening to kick off a week of human rights awareness.
The talk, titled "The Struggle for Immigrant Rights and the Struggle to Change U.S. Foreign Policy," will feature Sergio Maraboli, a former political prisoner and torture survivor under the Pinochet regime; Pierre Labossiere, founder of the Haiti Action Committee; and Efrain Trujillo Jr. and Zelica Rodriguez of the Service, Immigrant Rights and Education Network.
In addition to Monday's event, this week students will be participating in forums and creating videos and posters about issues like the death penalty, immigrant rights and U.S. foreign policy. The week is centered around International Human Rights Day, which the United Nations has named for Dec. 10.

Why do you think it's productive to teach young minds that the U.S. is the bad guy, and the worlds dictators and communists get a free pass on human rights.

Another perfectly good reason to think vfree has logical thinking and reading comprehension problems.

I read it again. Nothing in here indicates that the US is the "bad guy" for anything, or that anybody gets any "free pass." I hate soft-headed politics as much as the next guy, but you're reading stuff into it that isn't there.
Weirdest of all is your assertion that this is a reason to vote against school bonds! School bonds are property taxes with the money earmarked for building projects. They have nothing whatsoever to do with clubs or politics. Maybe there's a reason to vote against them, but this isn't it. (This is the "logical thinking" part I referred to.)

The extreme right wing wants to cut funding for education. They feel threatened by the idea that students hear the truth about repression under right wing dictatorships and the US role in establishing the Pinochet dictatorship.
