Design workshop set for McKelvey Park revamp

| The Santa Clara Valley Water District is hosting a workshop at the Mountain View library on Sept. 9 to develop plans for rebuilding McKelvey Park as a flood basin.
So far, conceptual plans include all-new baseball fields and related amenities, as well as a playground. Nearly the entire park will be rebuilt 15 feet lower so that in the event of a major flood, waters overflowing the banks of Permanente Creek can fill the park and be pumped out later.
McKelvey is one of four flood basins along Permanente Creek in a flood protection project recently approved by the Water District. Another design workshop for the other basin in Mountain View, the Cuesta Annex, is scheduled for Sept. 16.
After another round of design workshops in the fall, the City Council will review the designs for final approval.
The McKelvey workshop will be held Thursday, Sept. 9 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in the Mountain View Library community room at 585 Franklin St.

Posted by Mountain View Mom, a resident of the Old Mountain View neighborhood, on Sep 7, 2010 at 2:36 pm Too bad this is at exactly the same time as the parent Back to School Nights at both Graham and Crittenden Middle Schools. It would be really great if the "fall" workshops are publicized farther in advance--and if the Water District would ask the Mountain View Little League and Babe Ruth organizations to notify their email lists. Since my boys play baseball, I'm on both lists, and don't think I've received any email notifications about this meeting...Thanks for letting us know, MV Voice.

Posted by oscar, a resident of the Old Mountain View neighborhood, on Sep 15, 2010 at 11:59 pm that's crazy talk, babe ruth is a wonderful event for our youngsters, this field should remain open, and no one notified me of such meeting, I vote for babe ruth.

Posted by resident of St. Francis Acres (neighborhood surrounding McKelvey), a resident of the St. Francis Acres neighborhood, on Sep 30, 2010 at 2:21 pm Noone wants to get rid of the Babe Ruth diamond. Much of the neighborhood is requesting a "park" for the almost 300 children who live land locked by major roads with no park. The group from the neighborhood is asking for the Baby Ruth diamond to be part of the new Shoreline project and be relocated. It is a win win for all involved. New better Baby Ruth diamond and a beautiful play ground and open space for the community.
