Two out of nine Castro Elementary school students won awards and placed in the top 10 percent of competing students at the Math Matters contest held at the Bay Area Technology Magnet School in Oakland on Saturday, Jan. 29, said Principal Judy Crates.
Fifth-grader Chris Jawetz earned 2nd place in the competition and an iPod Touch, while fourth-grader Sean Takada received an honorable mention, ranking him in the top 20 students at the event, Crates said.
Seven other Castro students participated in the math contest: Roberto Cordero, Carmen Garcia, Michelle Kucynski, Caroline Gerrior, Kabir Wagle, Reyhaneh Turner, and Luke Osland; all were tested alongside 182 of some of the brightest fourth- and fifth-grade mathematicians in the Bay Area.
