Portola Valley resident Anthony C. Andrighetto, 21, has died as a result of a collision involving several vehicles at a major highway intersection in Tucson, Arizona, on Wednesday, Oct. 19, according to the Tucson Police Department.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with Anthony's family during this incredibly tragic time," said Kevin Makley, president of St. Francis High School in Mountain View, where Andrighetto graduated in 2009. "He was a special member of our Saint Francis family whom everyone looked up to and enjoyed spending time with."

"Our school community is simply heartbroken over Anthony's passing," said Holly Elkins, a school spokesperson, in a phone interview.

A story in the Daily Wildcat newspaper at the University of Arizona notes that he was a member of Delta Chi fraternity.

The accident began, according to several witnesses, with a van making a left turn into the right of way of a Jeep carrying Andrighetto and one other male passenger, police said. The press statement implies that Andrighetto was driving the Jeep.

The Jeep collided with the van, left the ground, struck a pole and came to rest on its side. Both Andrighetto and his passenger suffered life-threatening injuries and were taken by medics to a hospital, police said. Andrighetto succumbed to his injuries but the passenger was expected to survive.

Three other vehicles were involved in the collision with resulting injuries to three more passengers who were also taken to the hospital, but none with life-threatening injuries, police said.

Excessive speed does not appear to have been a factor, and an investigation will be looking into whether drugs or alcohol were factors, police said.

Authorities made no arrests and issued no traffic citations, police said.

At St. Francis High School, Andrighetto was noted for his involvement in community service through the club Brothers Reaching Into the Community, or BRIC Brothers. "The group strives to break down barriers and walls by teaching others to be welcoming and open-minded," according to a description on the school website.

"Anthony made a huge impact through his involvement in activities like the BRIC Brothers, football and track -- he will be deeply missed by our entire school community," school President Makley said.
