Council to take another stab at Rengstorff Park plan

| Seven months after the City Council rejected plans for revamping Rengstorff Park, city staffers are pitching four new scenarios on Tuesday that leave much of the park untouched.
The four scenarios focus on rebuilding and possibly relocating the Community Center and Aquatics Center in the park, which will cost up to $53 million and $15 million, respectively. The new plans are much cheaper than the more ambitious plans presented last September, which cost up to $139 million.
While the footprint of the buildings is shown in the proposals, designs for the buildings have not been created and funding has not been identified. Adding underground parking could add $4 million, while replacing the playground and skate park could add another $1 million to the project if they are displaced by the new buildings. If a temporary Community Center has to be built to allow the current site to be redeveloped, and that could cost another $3 million.
City staff say that unless the council objects, they plan to make redevelopment of the 1960s Community Center its first priority, followed by the Aquatics Center and then finally the Teen Center, now set for the former Rock Church site located across the street from the park.
The council will discuss the scenarios in a study session Tuesday evening at 5 p.m. in the plaza conference room at 500 Castro Street.

needed. Ruin alot of lives that walk..

Rengstorff is good as is. The Community Center is a bit dated but is perfectly serviceable.
The real problem is that we have people at city hall who are convinced down to their DNA that their job in life is to build and regulate. They cannot conceive even hypothetically of just leaving something as is. Open spaces like Cuesta Annex just drive them crazy. The $70 million pink castle that replaced the old much smaller city hall is a classic example. The $100,000 for four drawings of the train tracks or the proposed $325,000 for the traffic study are just products of their OCD.
If they really want to do something useful with Rengstorff, they could clean out the late-night gang bangers.

More insanity from the City Council.
Besides, the park is gang infested anyway.

Can't the city do or decide anything without outside help? What do we pay the city for if not planning and development of our city?

All of the suggestions were rejected. Lots of tax payer money wasted with no results. The city seems to lack vision or political will to make a decision. What does the city council do?

The answer to that is "next to nothing". Oh wait, they try to ban plastic bags, drive-thrus, and smoking in designated areas. They are oh so busy regulating our lives, that putting an end to the crime sprees and gang infestations is not a priority. That's what they do. Oh, that, and spending a ridiculous amount of money on "consultants" that the city could certainly find much better uses for.

The city staffers are piad to keep the city assets in good working order, we must keep the city up to date, or else it will cost more to repair, and if repair is to much money then replacement is needed. Yes this park has problems, it is well used, busy part of town. The pool needs to be designed for year round use, a nice swim center for both childern and adults, maybe has a place for work-out classes. Places that people will pay to use, C.C. building with classrooms and studios that people can rent by the hour. Meeting spaces that can be rented out, a small performing art center for movie showings, small plays, small concerts, in the back have a outdoor performance bowl. Keep the great lawn, fix up the tennis courts, fix up the BBq areas.
