Broken gas line closes El Camino

Bookmark and Share
A broken gas line caused the closure of El Camino Real in Mountain View Friday morning, fire officials said.

At about 9:50 a.m., a vehicle struck a gas meter, severing the gas line in front of 4410 El Camino Real, just across the street from the Mountain View border, according to Lynn Brown of the Mountain View Fire Department. Firefighters closed El Camino in both directions and evacuated two buildings -- 4410 and 4440 El Camino Real -- and ordered occupants of another building at 4460 El Camino to shelter in place, Brown said.

Pacific Gas & Electric crews repaired the damaged line, and the evacuation order was lifted at 11 a.m., he said. El Camino Real was reopened at 11:25 a.m., Brown said.

How far was the gas meter from the curb? How did the car get that far off the road? Was there a driveway at this location or did the car just go for a drive on the sidewalk?

Sorry, I don't have my blocks on El Camino memorized. The article doesn't list a cross street. so what part of mtn. view did this happen. is this next to Sunnyvale, Los Altos or Palo Alto?
