Woman, 80, hit by car on San Antonio Road, dies
Woman killed Thursday after being hit by car exiting Arco gas station

Bookmark and Share
An 80-year-old woman who was walking along San Antonio Road was struck and killed by a car that was exiting a gas station Thursday morning, June 21, Los Altos police said.

The woman was walking along the west side of the road toward El Camino Real at about 8:54 a.m. A gold-colored 2001 Volkswagen station wagon struck her in the Arco gas station driveway at the corner of Loucks Avenue and San Antonio, Sgt. Paul Arguelles said.

The driver, a 60-year-old Los Altos resident, was exiting the south driveway of the station, which is located at 988 North San Antonio Road.

The victim suffered severe injuries and was transported to Stanford Hospital for treatment. She died later that afternoon, he said.

Investigators do not believe the driver was intoxicated, and the driver has been cooperating with police.

The woman has been identified by the Santa Clara County Medical Examiner, but her name is not being released until her family is contacted, he said.

She is described as Caucasian with gray collar-length hair. She was wearing a multicolored (purple, pink and light green) shirt, brown shorts and black tennis shoes with purple trim.

More information will be added to this story as it becomes available.

The Los Altos Police Department Traffic Division is investigating the collision. Police are asking for anyone who might have seen the collision to call Sgt. Paul Arguelles at 650-947-2663 or the Los Altos Police Department at 650-947-2770.

Imagine how the guy who hit her feels right now. I can't imagine.

He probably feels like a murderer, which may not be far from the truth. Was he just not looking where he was going or something?

There are 3 "get out of jail free" cards that drivers can play in cirucmstances like this:

1) I didn't see him/her

2) The sun was in my eyes

3) He/She jumped in front of me/came out of nowhere

Considering that the victim was 80, number 3 is not likely to work. Has the driver played either card 1 or 2?

Why do you all assume that the driver was a man?

KNTV just reported another Mountain View woman died on hwy. 85 in Mountain View Saturday evening at 6:30pm, possible victim of a hit and run. So many this week. I've witnessed too many crashes the past 2 weeks. Please stay off the phones and watch the road.

Why is the victim's gender or age of headline importance?

The important point is that the victim was a Pedestrian on a Sidewalk, killed as result of a driver (probably) denying the idea that you are entering the street as soon as you begin crossing the sidewalk, and that you must stop before entering the street.

Let's hope we, as drivers and as pedestrians, can all learn something from this.
