Spare the air alert issued for Saturday

Bookmark and Share
The Bay Area Air Quality Management District has issued a Spare the Air alert for the region for Saturday, Sept. 29.

The alert is triggered in part by a forecast for sunny weather, officials said.

"This late summer hot spell means poor air quality is expected in the Bay Area, said Jack Broadbent, executive director for the district.

The alert was issued because concentrations of ground-level ozone pollution are forecast to be unhealthy tomorrow.

Residents are advised to walk, bike, carpool or take public transit, and to avoid pollution-creating activities such as using gas-powered lawnmowers or aerosol products.

The air district warns that high ozone levels are particularly hazardous for children, seniors and anyone with respiratory problems or a heart condition.

District officials urge residents to avoid vigorous outdoor exercise, except early in the morning when pollution levels are lower.

Please avoid polluting the air on Spare the Air Days. The pollution levels are awful for everyone's kids. Spend the day walking or biking around your local neighborhood instead of driving out of town. Thank you.
