Caltrain adds trains to keep up with demand
|
In response to two years of growing ridership, Caltrain on Monday added six trains to its regular weekday schedule between San Jose and San Francisco.
Caltrain spokeswoman Christine Dunn said Monday morning's commute with the added service went smoothly.
"Everything seems to be going well," Dunn said. "We're very pleased."
In June, Caltrain recorded an all-time high in ridership, with an average of 50,000 weekday passengers, Dunn said.
The gradual increase in passengers and the occasional overcrowded train car prompted the agency to add a total of four trains during the morning and afternoon commutes, and two trains in the off-peak hours.
Two of the six trains represent new service, and the other four are trains that were previously cut for budget reasons, according to Caltrain.
Also effective Monday, Oct. 1, 12 limited-service trains have added stops at the Palo Alto and Sunnyvale stations, giving passengers a little more flexibility on where to board, Dunn said.
"It gives people a few more options," she said.
Caltrain will be keeping track of how many passengers are taking advantage of the additional service in the coming months, Dunn said.— Bay City News Service Are you receiving Express, our free daily e-mail edition? See a sample and sign-up for Express.

But for the times when I am meeting someone in SF (like tonight), I really appreciate being able to take a train there, and read a book or work on my laptop or peoplewatch or talk (quietly) on my phone, rather than sit in traffic.
And for those times, I am grateful for all the commuters who keep the train in business.
Thanks, 50k daily riders! :)

Posted by James, a resident of the North Whisman neighborhood, on Oct 2, 2012 at 2:33 pm I wish they'd add a late night train from SJ going north on the weekends, instead of the final train of the night leaving at 10:30. It would be nice to spend the night on the town and not have to rely on a designated driver or a $50 cab ride.

Posted by Thoughts, a resident of the Cuernavaca neighborhood, on Oct 2, 2012 at 3:03 pm Similar to James, I wish they'd add a late night train from SF going south on weekends. The midnight train doesn't work for many people attending shows or concerts in SF.
I also wish they'd consider a "family package" on weekends. A lot of families (and especially their kids) would love to take the train up to SF. But for a family of 4-5, the cost of the train plus taxi/bus in SF is more than driving plus parking. As a proposal, if the cost of a round-trip ticket for an adult is $14, why not offer a weekend family pass for something like $35?
