Thunder, lightning jolt Bay Area residents
|
An unusual weather system brought lightning and thunder to the region overnight, startling some Bay Area residents.
There were reports of lightning strikes in a number of areas Tuesday night and early this morning, including off the coast of Pacifica and at San Francisco International Airport, according to the National Weather Service.
The lightning strikes in the Pacifica area were ongoing for more than half an hour beginning around 2 a.m., National Weather Service forecaster Diana Henderson said.
"Lightning and thunder doesn't happen often in the Bay Area," Henderson said. However, she added, "It was short-lived."
There were light rain showers near SFO overnight, an airport duty manager said. No flights were affected, he said.
It was the first time since June 4 that rainfall has been recorded at the airport, the weather service said on its Facebook page this morning.
Around 10 p.m. in Mountain View, the weather service received reports of light rainfall at Moffett Field.
Today, isolated thunderstorms are possible throughout the Bay Area, including in Monterey and Santa Cruz counties, Henderson said.

Posted by Fat Dave, a resident of the Castro City neighborhood, on Oct 10, 2012 at 1:30 pm There are terms: "Working with the residents" and "Working with the school" that I really hope are in play here. Assuming the residents who oppose the lights are opposed to it for specific reasons, if the residents concerns are addressed and proven not to be a problem, its a win win for everyone. The kids deserve the night games so instead of saying NO because some things "might" happen, lets work together to make sure things don't happen, then we can all rest easy those 3-4 nights out of the entire year. Oh, and if there is some negative incident, lets work to see how it happened and how it can be stopped. EVERY issue has a solution. Lets git 'er done

Posted by Rained On, a resident of another community, on Oct 10, 2012 at 2:18 pm I live by Castro School, and about 10pm we got loud thunder (scared the cat) and a lot of hard rain. It soaked my deck in a minute. It was gone in 5 minutes. Might have been hail.

Posted by ellekay, a resident of another community, on Oct 11, 2012 at 12:02 am It was eerie cause it came out of no where while I was watching "The Thing" alone at home. Kinda creeped me out. I thought my mind was playing tricks on me when I saw a flash out of my peripherals, then I realized it was actually lightning and thunder. Saw a few flashes and heard a few rumbles, but it only lasted 10 minutes or so.
