A Mountain View man suspected of beating his girlfriend was arrested after a seven-hour standoff on Sunday morning, police said.

At about 3:25 a.m. on Nov. 25, officers went to an apartment complex in the 800 block of Alice Avenue after receiving reports man armed with a shotgun had barricaded himself in an apartment and was threatening to to take his own life, according to Sgt. Sean Thompson, public information officer for the Mountain View Police Department.

Richard Johnson, 50, had allegedly assaulted his girlfriend before locking himself inside his apartment, Thompson said. The 47-year-old victim was able to get out of the apartment and call police. According to Thompson, it was the victim who told police that Johnson was threatening to kill himself.

Officers evacuated the surrounding area and a SWAT team made contact with the suspect. At about 10:25 a.m., Johnson surrendered to police negotiators. He was arrested on charges of battering his girlfriend and taken into custody.

The case remains under investigation, Thompson said. The initial police report noted only that Johnson's girlfriend said he was suicidal; it did not state whether Johnson threatened to take his own life.

Thompson said he did not know how the fight started. He said that suicides, suicide attempts and threats of suicide increase around the holidays for a variety of reasons.

Don't know about other folks but I am totally fed up with these disgruntled, emotionally adolescent males who go to hysterical violence against women and often end up murdering her along with himself cuz "he wants to die and he loves her too much to leave her behind without him". Which I bet was the intended scenario here.

These stories of male violence against females are in the news blogs on internet ~once or twice a week, and that's only the trip of the iceberg. Male violences against women eg murder rape assault etc are epidemic in this country and neighbors, friends, strangers want to ignore this dynamic because it's easier for them that way.

50,000 women are murdered each year in this country primarily by their male partner; 500,000 females of all ages are raped each year in this country primarily by males they are acquainted with. Sexual slavery is alive and well in nearly every neighborhood.

It's an epidemic and it is not getting better or going away. Think about it... I dare you... think about it and don't forget it. I dare you.

I know this man very well personally. He is not suicidal, aggressive, nor abusive towards anyone.

From what I have heard from others who know him and spoke to him, the so-called assault may have been little more than placing his hand over her mouth in an attempt to get her to stop yelling at him, I don't know. I don't think Mr. Johnson hit or tried to injure her in any way. That's not in his character. That, I DO know.

I believe the media has blown this way out of proportion. Hope I'm correct...Time will tell.

Suspected and allegedly; sounds like nobody is going to say anything happened. And the victim said no more than "Johnson was threatening to kill himself". Altho I suspect there may be more, the article is a pile of mush.

Kate -- OK. I'll take your dare. Consider it ignored.

Everyone else -- I also know this guy and his GF. Like Steve said, it's bad but somewhat blown out of proportion.
