Construction workers 'nick' gas line in downtown Mountain View
No danger to surrounding community, fire official says

Bookmark and Share
There is no danger of an explosion or fire after construction workers near the corner of Bryant and Villa streets clipped a gas line this afternoon (Jan. 4) while performing renovations on what is to become Steins Beer Garden, a fire official said.

Firefighters and police responded shortly after 4 p.m. to an area near Red Rock Coffee, where the wind apparently carried the smell of gas, leading to a report of a possible leak.

Lynn Brown of the Mountain View Fire Department said that the construction crew "nicked a line" while working at the project site. The crew acted quickly to call PG&E, Brown said.

But in the meantime, someone near Red Rock apparently smelled the gas leak and notified the authorities, which caused a fire engine and multiple Mountain View police squad cars to be sent to the area, according to Brown and a witness.

Brown said there is no danger to anyone in the surrounding area and confirmed that no one had been asked to evacuate.
