Woman smashes man's phone at gas station, police say

Bookmark and Share
A Palo Alto woman was arrested on the morning of March 9 after allegedly pushing a gas station attendant and then running over his phone multiple times, according to police.

The woman, whom police identified as 41-year-old Kathryn Drummond, pulled into the Union 76 gas station located at 1010 El Monte Avenue on Saturday at about 7:30 a.m., according to Mountain View police spokesman Sgt. Sean Thompson. She allegedly used the station's squeegees to clean the tires of her vehicle.

The attendant told the woman he wanted her to stop, Thompson said. According to the police report, he was concerned that customers might slip on the fluid from the squeegees; she was apparently cleaning the tires of her car near the entrance to the station's convenience store.

The woman would not stop, Thompson said, so the attendant, a 37-year-old Campbell man, tried to take the squeegee away, Thompson said. The woman reportedly pushed the man, and he told her he was going to call the police and used his cell phone camera to take a pictures of the woman and her car's license plate.

After taking his position behind the register, the man placed his phone on the counter, according to the police report. The woman entered the small store, snatched the man's phone, and hurried to her car.

Following her out, the man told police he saw her looking at the device in what may have been an attempt to find and erase the photograph.

The woman allegedly threw the phone on the ground and used her car to run over the handset multiple times, destroying the device, before driving away, according to Thompson.

Police located the woman shortly after the incident, arrested her and cited her for assault and vandalism.

According to the police report, Drummond also called police to report her side of the story -- telling police she was threatened by the gas station attendant. Thompson could not confirm whether the police had received a call from Drummond.

After being cited and fingerprinted at the Mountain View Police Department building, the woman was released.

It's been my experience that innocent people usually don't feel compelled to destroy evidence.

I often try to teach my kids, if you're using someone else's property and they want it back, you are supposed to give it back to them, even if you still want it. Kathryn does not appear to have learned this lesson very well thus far.

I'm going to make a wild@ssed guess here: this arrogant and entitled dumb@ss was driving an SUV made by either BMW, Lexus or Mercedes Benz ... DO I WIN A PRIZE FOR GUESSING CORRECTLY?! This is the same type of person who waits until THE VERY LAST MINUTE before dangerously and unsafely speeding over from the fast lane into the slow lane and immediately into the Exit lane. I'm SO sorry lady -- was I in your way???

Who cleans their tires with a squeegee? Sucks for the next person up trying to clean their window!

Its stories like these that prove there is not much difference between "Me first" type entitled behavior, and dirt-bag behavior.

Whatever it started out as, it ended with one person now being a criminal. Well played lady, so totally worth it cuz now you have clean tires!

@Mark: I doubt it that they're driving an SUV from such luxury marques (that's what car washes are for). On the other hand, she probably uses obfuscated profanity and words in all-caps when posting on line.

Those Palo Altans. Go easy on them. It's so stressful to live in Palo Alto that they have to come to Mountain View to clean your tires with a window squeegee?

The only thing that separates Palo Altans from Mountain Viewers is 10% in property values. And an MV inferiority complex that's rivaled only by the one exhibited by the San Jose City Council.

What kind of idiot uses a squeegee to clean the tires? And then refuse to listen to the attendant's request to stop? And then go on violent tantrum to crush the cellphone with her vehicle? Are people really out of common sense and basic decency to do the minimal good thing ?

I feel awful for the attendant! Imagine dealing with this sort of character on an early Saturday morning. Hope she has to reimburse him for the costs of obtaining a replacement phone. What a childish lunatic temper tantrum thing to do: repeatedly run back and forth over a phone.

Thank you to this man for identifying and expressing safety concerns for other customers and ceasing the blantant misuse of the gas station equipment. And thank you for getting her license plate # and calling MVPD! This woman was clearly not functioning emotionally to be behind the wheel!

People from Palo Alto are stress cases..ticking time bombs of anger. Have you ever seen the way they drive?! OMG, its unreal. I like that those folks live in PA, I REALLY do.

I wonder if she washing any evidence of the tires?

Why would you go to a gas station to clean your tires with a squeegee?

I hope there are no cats or dogs missing in that neighborhood.
