EPA orders NASA to clean up contaminated soil at Moffett Field

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency on Friday ordered NASA to take immediate and long-term actions to clean up contaminated soils at Ames Research Center at Moffett Field, according to the EPA.
The soils at the site are contaminated with polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), lead, chromium, zinc, cadmium, and dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT), and are posing a threat to local wildlife, according to the EPA.
Last year the U.S. Navy spent $9.7 million cleaning up an adjacent storm water retention pond and the soils at Ames Research Center have the potential to re-contaminate the neighboring site.
The California State Regional Water Quality Control Board and the EPA plan to continue to negotiate a facility-wide cleanup agreement with NASA at the Moffett Field Superfund site and monitor the cleanup.— Bay City News Service Are you receiving Express, our free daily e-mail edition? Not only does Hangar 1 not have any purpose, it isn't even suitable to be refurbished. I'm all about protecting important historical land, but all hangar one represents is a failed Navy project, obsolete before it was even completed, that got lots of sailors killed. Raze it.

Someone resurrect Airship Ventures, and give them an upgrade!!! It could be the mascot of the consortium of rich powerful Silicon Valley companies. Why oh why was that wonderful inspirational gem allowed to die? GOOGLE?!?!?!

Does it really matter which part of the Federal Government has to pay to clean up Moffett Field? It's all just funny money at that point. Whether the Navy pays or NASA or the EPA.. it's all Federal dollars being spent.
