Protesters call for 'oil free' president

About 30 members of MoveOn.org gathered on a crowded Mountain View intersection -- the site of three gas stations -- to call for an "oil free" president. But all eyes were on one activist in particular, dressed only in a skirt and brazier and covered in Christmas tree lights.

Eve Matelan, of Saratoga, joined her fellow protesters at the corner of El Camino Real and Grant Road on Wednesday. The group said they worry that Republican presidential nominee Sen. John McCain's connection to the oil industry will only continue to contribute to high gas prices and increased carbon dioxide emissions.

Calling herself "the future of energy," Matelan, who took the bus to the protest, talked with drivers at the nearby gas stations, discussing high gas prices, the need for alternative energy and McCain's energy policies. She said oil would someday be scarce, and it was time to get creative with other sources of energy.

"All I can do is stand in front of a gas station with my Christmas light future and beg [McCain] to think differently," she said.

The Mountain View demonstration was part of a larger protest Wednesday, joining over 200 protests nationwide, including five others in the Bay Area.

All the protesters said they came for the same reason: to inform locals on McCain's oil and gas policies, which are influenced, they believe, by the fact that more than 20 of his staffers were also oil lobbyists. The group was angered by McCain's recent proposal for offshore drilling on the California coast, and encouraged residents to cast their vote for Sen. Barack Obama in the fall.

"If people want relief from high oil prices, they will have to look somewhere else," said Christine Fawcett, a MoveOn.org volunteer who organized the event.

Standing under a gas station sign advertising gas for $4.53 a gallon, the protestors marched back and forth with signs reading "Big oil buys another president," among other messages. They said the federal government needs to impose a carbon tax, and agreed McCain was the wrong candidate for the job.

Los Altos resident Karl Danz said he tries to ride his bike everywhere -- he and his family cycled out to the protest -- and said current energy policies were adding to the world's pollution problems.

I think Town Square forums, like other blogs, attract the troglodytes (like Jesus Loves You) more than than they elevate the discussion. I don't see that they are making the world or our city a better place, so I'm done with them, as of today.

I actually just wanted to post this regarding the following quote from the first paragraph:

"But all eyes were on one activist in particular, dressed only in a skirt and brazier and covered in Christmas tree lights."

According to Wikipedia, "A brazier is a container for fire, generally taking the form of an upright standing or hanging metal bowl or box." That MUST have been something to see!!!

HUMANS ARE GOING TO HAVE TO DIE, at least 2/3 of the total population in order for the Climate Change People to have their plan of restoring earth to it's natural habitat. The Government is Criminal.

What strange comments from the "Jesus" commenters. Please be civil.

I am glad to see that these local MoveOn members are calling attention to McCain who is NOT the same as Obama on energy.

1. McCain has a 0% ranking from the League of Conservation Voters this year. He missed every vote. Obama has a lifetime ranking of 86%.

2. McCain supports offshore drilling. Obama doesn't.

3. Obama wants a windfall profits tax on oil company profits and would refund some of it to families to help with their energy costs. McCain's tax plan would give oil companies tax breaks of $3.8 billion a year, including $1.2 billion for ExxonMobil.

4. Obama would require auctioning off pollution credits and raise up to $30 billion a year under cap and trade. These funds would be available for clean jobs and clean energy. McCain would give away these credits to polluters, not make them pay.

5. And in case you still think these candidates are interchangeable, McCain has taken $1 Million from oil and gas interests, and has 33 oil company lobbyists and staffers (see July 7 Public Campaign Action Fund report at Web Link )

Is Turning America into a [word removed] of the world government, where 3/4 of our incomes are taxed and we are given carbon cards civil?

No, it is not, It will create a black market for carbon cards. Carbon Dioxide is good for the plants and tree.

The World Gov cuts down rain forests instead of legalizing hemp, which saved the world in WW II. Coal Companies owned by Gore a and others, pollute the most. The suppression of alien energy technology to solve energy issues. The World Government wants to cut the population down to their 168 families and their minions. They are crossed breading animals and humans, harvesting spider and goat and caow and pig humans. They allow abortion which is the worst mass murder. They are planning on staging a UFO earth war.

Global Warming was a engineered for the world to have a common enemy and blame the people. The Top Nazi Scientists are in on this global warming scam. They've only been taking weather records since 1869, in the 1500s there was a mini ice age, Things were a lot hotter 1somethin years ago. in this town, right here lets all get prepared and be like the mormons, stock up on heat and food and water and energy and an armagedon ready vehicle. Country Folks will surive.

Pretty stupid people. The single most effective way to reduce CO2 from cars is to raise the price of gas. Gas expensive, less pollution. Gas cheap, more pollution. It's not much harder than that.

I think these people are a little bit on the left side of the bell curve. And why do they come from other communities to Mountain View to be loudmouths? Can't they pick a gas station in their own town?

I hate being preached to, but I hate even more being preached to by out-of-towners.

MV Resident, I know several of the people at that rally were MV or Los Altos residents. Cant speak for all of them, but your "point" is baseless.

If George Bush gave a speech in MV, I guess you wouldnt listen? Darn out-of-towner.

I'm a free market guy, too. I assume that you also support removing all government subsidies and favorable treatment for oil companies. Oh, and, um, wars.

As a happy, free market advocate, I was pleased to hear from the Mountain View resident. This local fear of out of towners must be a surprise to Caltrain passengers. After all, how many people live in Mountain View? Enough folks to support all the businesses on Castro Street?

You'll be happy to know, I wasn't even preaching; I was entertaining. And exercising my rights. How chic of you to reject the constitution! It's all the rage these days...
