Yes on Foothill De Anza parcel tax

To make up for the loss of $20 million in revenues over the last two years, trustees of the Foothill De Anza community college district have placed a $69 annual parcel tax on the ballot.

The new tax would produce nearly $7 million a year over the next six years, if district residents approve the tax, which must win a two-thirds vote.

Board President Bruce Swenson said the tax is needed to help the cash-strapped district, which has cut course offerings and laid off hundreds of faculty and staff positions.

Community colleges are the best and only option for many students who either did not get into four-year colleges or could not afford to attend them. In these economic times, property owners are not eager to add new taxes, but we hope they will do the right thing and approve Measure E, the parcel tax for the Foothill De Anza district.
