Voices Around Town

Do you think texting behind the wheel is as dangerous as driving drunk?

Asked in downtown Mountain View. Photos by Michelle Le and interviews by Nick Veronin.

"I don't think texting and driving is as dangerous as drinking and driving. With texting you can just text, 'Yes,' or 'I'm driving,' but drinking you go crazy and it's dangerous."

Alice Fong, Hong Kong

"Texting and driving is the same as drinking and driving, because when you're texting you're taking your eyes off the road and when you take your eyes off the road you can't see where you're going. When you're drunk you can't pay attention — same thing."

Lester Hamilton, Fremont

"I definitely think text-driving is just as bad as drunk driving. It's taking your mind off the road and it's not good either way."

Michelle Mendenhall, Sunnyvale

"I think texting while driving is as dangerous as drinking while driving, simply because the amount of time that you keep your eyes off the road can really create some problems."

Andy Russell, Saratoga

"I think it is dangerous to text and drive. Basically, you just have to watch the road. You cannot text and watch the road at the same time."

John Franks, San Jose
