Voices Around Town

Do you support Prop. 29, which would increase tax on cigarettes by $1?

Asked in downtown Mountain View. Photos and interviews by Nick Veronin.

"I totally support the extra $1 tax on cigarette packs. I think it will definitely get people to give up the habit, or at least help people who are suffering from the consequences of the habit."

Jithun Nair, Mountain View

"I fully appreciate and would like to see the tax passed."

Julie Milburn, San Francisco

"I support proposition 29. I hate the smell of cigarettes, it's not good for you, it's not good for people around you, and if it's more expensive, that's one more reason not to smoke."

Emily Mulle, San Francisco

"The people who are paying for cigarettes should also pay an additional tax that goes into research for healthcare for them."

Mark Chen, Palo Alto

"No, I wouldn't. I'm a smoker. I'm retired. Lots of people are retired that smoke. They don't have all that much money — I don't have all that much money. It's an all-around bad idea."

Don, Mountain View
