Voices Around Town

What do you think of the president's reprieve for young immigrants who came to the U.S. illegally as children?

Asked in downtown Mountain View. Pictures and interviews by Daniella Sanchez and Emily Efland.

"As for how it will affect California specifically, I'm sure we'll have a lot less paperwork to do. They don't get much say in the matter as kids, so why penalize them?"

Jonathan Mahony, East Palo Alto

"I don't know how many children will be affected in California, but I don't think it'll affect anything all that much — 800,000 doesn't sound like a big number here in the whole country. I would object to their being given preferential treatment, which I've heard might be the case."

Laurie Darmien, Los Gatos

"It depends on the kind of education they've had, the kind of school systems they've gone to, how much have we invested in their education and what they can contribute to society. I think everybody needs to be given a fair chance."

Anoop Lalla, Mountain View

"He's looking only to get the vote. It's about him. It's hard, because a lot of people in this country are immigrants, and they don't have the same opportunity as the other guys."

Fatima Ramirez, Mountain View

"I think the executive order by the president makes a lot of sense. I think it has a lot of implications for California because of our immigrant population. I think he should have passed the Dream Act."

Bill Scott, Milpitas
