NASA Ames offers buyouts to hundreds of employees

A source at NASA Ames has emailed the ==I Voice== a list of over 400 employees who have been offered buyouts worth up to $25,000 in exchange for leaving their jobs.

*sigh*; i thought government sector would be safe - an looking to go in that science direction (currently studying geology)

If experience of other federal agencies is a guide, almost all these buy-outs will be taken by employees who are planning to retire during July-December 2009 anyway. It does not make financial sense for anyone else to take it. People are better off getting laid-off because the benefits of doing so are more valuable that $25K ($16K -$17K after taxes).

The government was offering $25,000 buyouts in the 80's. You would have thought they would raise the buyout for inflation, at the least make it tax free. Otherwise it's not really worth it.

How come the center director is not on the list if he is losing $100 mln from the less than $800 mln annual budget?
