Department heads showed commitment to city

Original post made on Jan 4, 2010

Kathy Farrar came up through the ranks of Mountain View city government starting as a 20-year-old clerk in 1971. Karen Burnett led the public library into the new century. And Cathy Lazarus has been running the complex Public Works Department for 11 years. All three are retiring this month.

Mountain View has an enviable history for being the most innovative community in the Bay Area. City Councils over the years have set visionary policies, but it's taken city staff members like Kathy, Karen, Cathy and their predecessors to bring these policies to fruition: Castro Street, North Bayshore, Shoreline Park, the library, city hall, the CPA, the partnership for parks with the community's schools, and my recent favorite, the reservoir beneath Graham's playing field truly set an example for cities across the country. Thanks for the legacies, ladies. You should be very proud of what you've accomplished!

They should thank us, since we are about to fund their exorbitant public retirements on borrowed money.

Any one notice or ask why so many public employees are choosing to retire now? They must see that reform is on the way, so they had better lock in that monthly check now.

How are these three anything special, particularly in light of their absurdly generous retirement packages and benefits. Many people toil day in and day out at work to help other people and never approach the compensation these three are receiving on the taxpayers back. Go find a recently retired teacher or doctor and compare their retirement packages in light of their lives' work. These three should be more concerned with karma.

I'd say you three are about the crabbiest, most ubsurd people in Mountain View. Probably couldn't get a job. Go get a life.
