This story corrects an error in the print version, which incorrectly says that the city is considering a reduction in the size of the fire department. The city is only talking about eliminating "minimum staffing requirements" in the fire department, which means that there could be fewer firefighters on duty at any given time in order to save on overtime pay.
I salute all 7 members of the Council for dealing with the budget challenges in a mature and responsible way. I also salute City Staff for helping, rather than crossing their arms over their chests and taking a "not my problem, I've got a contract" attitude.
As far as revenue increase go, I'd like to see an increase in the 3% electricity tax explored. Many cities have much higher utility tax rates (though, it must be said, most cities have no utility tax at all). A 1-percentage point increase could raise a lot of money, mostly from large business users. A typical renter or homeowner would pay less than $1 per month extra.
Last week I was swimming laps at Eagle Park Pool (where the user fees for local residents are going up approximately 30% later this summer, more for seniors) and a group of Mtn. View Fireman came in to observe or supervise a safety class. There were 6-8 of these guys "visiting" with the pool staff for at least 1/2 hour, having a great time! Can we survive with a reduction in their staff?
Don't miss out on the discussion!
