You got a license for that cat, Mister?

Original post made on Jun 6, 2013

For the first time, the city of Mountain View is poised to require that pet cats be licensed. The City Council voted Tuesday to replace its 1972 animal control ordinance with one requiring that cats, just like dogs, be licensed, among other rules.

Most cats these days have microchips to help their owners find them. Requiring cat licenses is more paperwork and regulation without benefit to the community. I seriously wonder why the council isn't focused on more important issues.

My indoor cats are chipped and I would think that a Mt. View based vet could help with getting a reader so collars could be avoided. Not sure why this has become such a hot topic with our council when we're dealing with larger issues, including controlling auto speeds, given the (way too) many pedestrian deaths in the past year.

My b;acl/white cat was chipped and collared, but vanished Thanksgiving day 2012. He had a break-away collar for safety, so he may have lost it and was taken in by someone assuming he was a stray.

I fail to see how a license would help at all. This looks like just another money grab.

Who shares in the revenue generated by the fees? Who will enforce it? If a law cannot be enforced its no law.
