Sunnyvale newborn found safe

The father of a 2-week-old baby boy who allegedly abducted his son in Sunnyvale on Tuesday afternoon was arrested trying to cross the border to Mexico today, Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety officials said.

The infant, Henry Guler Romero, was safely recovered by Mexican authorities, police said.

His father, 22-year-old Mesut Guler, had allegedly taken Henry from an apartment complex in the 900 block of Helen Avenue at about 4 p.m. Tuesday after he got into an argument with his girlfriend, Henry’s mother.

The incident was reported to police at about 10:30 p.m.

Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety Capt. Dave Pitts said the abduction appears to have stemmed from an ongoing dispute between Guler and his girlfriend over his desire to move out of state.

“She did not want to, and then that led to him taking the child,” Pitts said.

He said Guler had wanted to move “back to New York.”

The baby’s mother said Guler has friends in Mexico and might be headed in that direction, according to Pitts.

Mexican authorities stopped Guler at a border checkpoint today and contacted U.S. Border Patrol agents in Arizona, who discovered a warrant for Guler’s arrest obtained by Sunnyvale police, Pitts said.

Mexican authorities are working to transfer Guler and his son back to the U.S.

Henry was recovered unharmed.

Guler has previously threatened to harm himself and the baby, police said.
