No windfall for local schools in state budget

Original post made on Jan 21, 2014

Though Gov. Jerry Brown is calling for big increases in education spending, Mountain View schools aren't likely to benefit all that much from his recently proposed budget, according to local school officials.

Doesn't MV have 3 school districts instead of 2? MVWSD, LASD, and MVLA? The whole southwest part of town is in LASD.

The effect is the same on both elementary school districts. This area already had above average revenue. The governor's budget put an extra $2 Billion into schools but he just directed it to the non-rich school districts with the low income and ELL students (plus foster kids). That seems fair to me. And some of the extra income tax revenue is being used to pay down (Slowly) the debts that have been run up in the past few years where the revenue was so low. That's good too. I am very happy with Jerry Brown. Just because the local school districts won't benefit doesn't mean that most California kids won't. They will.

LASD is about 20% dedicated to serving Mountain View and also about 20% of Mountain View elementary kids attend LASD. LASD also serves portions of Palo Alto and Los Altos Hills. Mountain View Whisman also serves a small slice of Sunnyvale based on the old creek path before it shifted over near Mountain View High School on the other side of 85.
