Environmental Planning Commission Conflict of Interest

Original post made by Konrad M. Sosnow on Feb 10, 2014

Rachel Grossman, Real Estate Project Executive at Google is the Chair of the Mountain View Environmental Planning Commission.

The Commission has the authority and responsibility to, among other things, Formulate and recommends plans for Mountain View, including the General Plan for the physical development of the City.

Will Rachel Grossman, a Google executive, recommend plans that are in the best interest of Google, her employer, or Mountain View?

Will Rachel Grossman, a Google executive, attempt to sway the other six members of the Environmental Planning Commission to support Google's wishes?

How much of Rachel Grossman's compensation at Google will be a function of how she directs the Environmental Planning Commission to support Google's wishes?

Should we change the name to Google's Environmental Planning Commission?

One would presume that the city attorney gave this appointment a once over and advised the city that it would not be in violation of any of California's laws governing this kind of appointment. That said, on the surface, to have a Real Estate Project Executive at Google also serving as the Chair of the Environmental Planning Commission for the City of Mountain View, well the arrangement does seem to have a whiff of impropriety, which imho, the city (and google) should be striving to avoid.

Google pays this person's salary and it does not seem unreasonable to question if/how this person is able to separate what might be in the best interest of the City of Mountain View vs what might be in the best interest of Google, inc. Despite what some may believe, those interests are not one and the same.

How is it that the Voice has not reported this. Maybe its legal, but seems HIGHLY suspect. MV Voice, please assign a writer to this one. I think its an important information for the community, and should be widely reported/known.
I'm not saying I would remove her, but if everyone knows the situation, we can keep a close eye on her. I for one will be doing so. Thanks for the heads up Konrad
