Sorry to see Buda Thai closing after April 25th

Original post made by NW Resident, North Whisman, on Apr 22, 2014

Buda Thai was a welcome addition to the North Whisman neighborhood a few years ago and have been serving up delicious, family-inspired Thai cuisine since then, but sadly this is their last week at their current location.

If you haven't been there before, I encourage you to try them for lunch or dinner this week. They have something for everyone whether one's choice includes meat, seafood or vegetarian options.

I also heard that the small Clocktower coffee shop next door to the restaurant has already closed, so I guess it's another sign of change in the neighborhood.

I'm sorry to see any local independent restaurant close, especially in a neighborhood without others of its kind.

That said -- and this is based on just one visit, so must be taken for what it's worth; single visits can't judge what's typical at a restaurant, and all kitchens have random "off" days -- some of us who regularly eat at Thai restaurants locally tried Buda with high hopes a few months ago, and were rather let down. We tried a selection of typical Thai dishes including the much-praised pumpkin curry. (Pumpkin curry was made just with pumpkin puree, an easy option offered at many Thai restaurants, and not notably distinctive at Buda; a couple of other dishes were more disappointing.)
Local Thai-food fans can do both well and authentically, albeit outside of the Whisman neighborhood, at downtown-area favorites Amarin and Shana Thai, and the younger Bangkok Bistro on Rengstorff -- a smallish place with limited menu but a very good Thai cook, superb at what he does well. These suggestions are based on about 10 meals each at Shana and Bangkok Bistro in recent years, and 60 or more meals at Amarin over 20+ years.
